The heart behind Your Partner in Wellness
I’m Laika Maharaj, a Registered Clinical Dietitian, Lactation Consultant, Diabetic Nurse Educator, and the founder of Your Partner in Wellness.
But before any title, qualification, or neatly written bio, I am someone who has spent years standing in the very real gap between what healthcare tells people to do — and what people are actually able to do.
My journey as a dietitian has taken me through 13 hospitals, across vastly different healthcare settings. I have worked in poverty-driven communities where nutrition advice has to be practical, affordable, and deeply sensitive to circumstance. I have worked in the private sector, where access may be better, but the struggles are often just as complex. I have locumed in multiple hospitals, worked alongside many dietitians, doctors, nurses, specialists, and multidisciplinary teams, and absorbed an enormous amount from every room I have walked into.
That experience shaped me.
It taught me that nutrition is never just about food.
Of course, food matters. Science matters. Blood results, diagnoses, medication, hormones, gut health, body composition, and meal structure all matter. But after years in clinical practice, I began to see something clearly: the traditional healthcare route often stops too early.
We identify the problem.
We explain the solution.
We give the advice.
And then the patient is expected to go home and somehow turn all of that into a life.
That is where I believe we fall short.
Because the path of recovery, change, consistency, and true wellness is not built in a single consultation. It is built in the quiet, everyday moments where people are trying to make better choices while dealing with stress, culture, finances, hormones, family, work, cravings, fatigue, emotions, and a world that makes nutrition feel far more complicated than it needs to be.
I began to realise that the missing piece was not just information.
It was support.
Support for the client who knows what they need to do, but does not know how to make it work in their actual life. Support for the mother who is exhausted but wants to nourish herself and her baby. Support for the person with diabetes who has been told what to avoid, but not how to eat with confidence. Support for the professional who wants to perform at a higher level, but is running on caffeine, stress, and whatever is available between meetings. Support for the patient recovering from illness who needs more than a pamphlet and a polite goodbye.
And if I am honest, it was also support for me as a clinician.
Because when you care deeply about your patients, you feel the limitations of the system. You see the gaps. You know there is more that can be done. You know people need more than a plan — they need a partner.
That is why I created Your Partner in Wellness.
This platform is my answer to the gap I kept seeing.
It is a global nutrition and wellness space designed to bring credible, practical, culturally aware nutrition support into one place. A space where science meets real life. Where food is not stripped of culture, tradition, pleasure, identity, or meaning. Where your likes, dislikes, background, routine, beliefs, environment, hormones, emotions, and lifestyle are not treated as inconveniences — they are treated as part of the clinical picture.
Because they are.
Nutrition support is not simply about what you eat.
It is about who you are.
It is about where you come from.
It is about what your body has been through.
It is about your stress, your sleep, your hormones, your emotions, your culture, your access to food, your family structure, your work life, your habits, your history, and your hopes for your health.
That is the deeper work.
At Your Partner in Wellness, my goal is to make nutrition feel more accessible, intelligent, and human — whether you are in South Africa, the UK, the UAE, Australia, India, the United States, or anywhere else on the planet. This is a space for people across cultures, traditions, and lifestyles who want science-backed guidance that still respects the reality of being human.
You will find evidence-based nutrition here, yes.
But you will also find warmth. Strategy. Practicality. A little philosophy. A lot of intention. And hopefully, the refreshing relief of not being told to eat plain chicken and broccoli for the rest of your life.
My approach is holistic, but not vague. Scientific, but not cold. Personalised, but not overcomplicated. I believe nutrition should help you understand your body, not fear it. It should create structure without stealing joy. It should support health without making you feel like your entire life needs to revolve around a meal plan.
I created this platform because I believe people deserve better access to nutrition support.
Not just when they are sick.
Not just when they are overwhelmed.
Not just when they have reached breaking point.
But throughout their lives — as they grow, heal, perform, mother, work, age, recover, rebuild, and become more connected to themselves.
